Napier nestles under the Soetmuisberg (Sweet Mouse Mountain) and is surrounded by rolling green and yellow fields in winter time.  (Wheat, barley & canola!)  Winding its way through the village is the Klippedrif River which finds its origin in the Vlermuiskelderkloof.(Bat cellar ravine) above Napier.

With its natural beauty and proximity to Cape Town, it is no wonder that so many city dwellers have made this village their chosen getaway destination.  Many of the old houses have been bought and lovingly restored to their former glory.

Established in 1838 and named after the governor of the Cape at the time (Sir George Napier), the village is full of character and still contains much of its old world charm. 

The Dutch Reformed Church, inaugurated in 1928,  has rather unusual architecture.  It was built in the form of a Greek Cross and has teak interior and a beautiful pipe organ. 

Nowadays the “Dominee” (Minister) not only ministers to the Afrikaans folk in the village but also the English.  Sunday mornings start with an 08:00 English Service that is followed by the 9:30 Afrikaans Service.  A lovely camaraderie exists between English and Afrikaans speakers!

For the commemoration of the village’s 150th Anniversary in 1988, one of the first buildings in Napier, the ‘Feeshuis’ (The festival house), was restored.  This building, found next to the church in the main road, was used as slave quarters between 1810 and 1820.  The beautifully maintained gardens around the house are always planted with red, white and blue flowers.

Both establishments were declared National Monuments in April 1978. 

Much of the ground in Napier belonged to the Church and plots were sold subject to the condition that decent buildings were erected which had to be plastered and no alcohol was to be sold on the premises.  These conditions still exist in some of the Title Deeds today.

The village is known for its Patatfees (Sweet Potato Festival) which is held at the school grounds every year in June.  The large high school, so the story goes, was supposed to have been allocated to Mossel Bay but was built in Napier owing to a departmental error.

One of the special landmarks in Napier is the Ox-wagon Monument erected in 1988, commemorating the Ossewa (Ox Wagon) Trek of  1838.  An impression of a wagon wheel track was made in concrete.  The monument can be found on the main road near the Napier Farmstall!

Danie du Toit, a resident who has been keenly interested in the movement of the sun and the passing of the hours, distinguished himself by designing and building a large, vertical sundial in 1965.(Probably the largest in the country)  He built it in front of the municipal offices in Newmark Street.  There the time can be read accurately to the nearest 30 seconds.
